Golf’s biggest event is almost upon us, as Europe v America will begin at Le Golf National this weekend. There are 16,000 tickets available as of Thursday, but why take your chances? I asked some of the guys who made the event their own, and the recollections that came out will make you want to see the sport’s oldest competition live.

Told by Ted Ray: “The highlights of my time on the Ryder Cup team were the Sunday singles, especially beating Tony Jacklin. He was so relaxed, and his body language is fantastic. After the match, we went into the changing room and didn’t say a word, because you were already so excited and stoned.”

Rich Beem: “Tim Clark and I, coming off the first tee in the final singles of the 2005 event, and we were both on nine. We were both slightly out of it but, with thousands watching on giant television screens in the middle of the course, we made a bee-line for the second tee, so we could see it clearly. We looked at each other and said, ‘You gotta be fucking kidding me.’”

Tim Clark: “I never felt like a favourite going into the 2004 contest. The Americans had won a couple of times. But when I made that double eagle, I knew that I had the crowd on my side. The Ryder Cup and golf is all about the adrenalin you can get from hitting shots and putting, and you couldn’t fake that emotion.”

Tiger Woods: “When I got my first point, back in 1997, I remember getting the ball out of my bag and hearing an announcer’s voice tell me I had ‘the 40’. I don’t know how that happened, but the fans took it to heart and began screaming over and over again, ‘The 40’.
