A woman died and two are in critical condition after a vehicle crashed into pedestrians in Vancouver, Canada.

Speaking to CNN from the scene, a local woman who witnessed the incident described the chaos that unfolded there.

What happened?

The incident happened Thursday in Vancouver, at Granville Street and West 8th Avenue — one of the city’s busiest areas.

According to a statement from Vancouver Police, a car and several pedestrians were involved in a collision near the intersection.

“At this time, we believe the pedestrian deaths to be a result of the collision and not a result of the suspect jumping out of the vehicle and attacking pedestrians,” the statement reads.

Authorities also noted they were looking into whether the incident was a terrorist-related act. The female driver was detained and the vehicle was towed from the scene.

“The investigation thus far indicates the suspect deliberately drove into a group of pedestrians,” police said in a statement.

The 22-year-old suspect, who has not been identified, was arrested without incident.

According to local reports, the identity of the woman who died has not been released, pending notification of next of kin.

Who are the victims?

Two people are in critical condition. A 50-year-old male and an 18-year-old female were both hospitalized, according to Michael McLaughlin, a director with The Vancouver Hospital.

The cause of their injuries is not known, but McLaughlin said: “Both of them are conscious and alert.”

Though McLaughlin told CNN it’s “too early” to know if these victims were struck by the vehicle or the car-pedestrian collision, he said: “It looks like they [the pedestrians] were out here waiting on a bus.”

Witnesses told CNN affiliate CTV Vancouver that they saw people unconscious and motionless on the street.

“I see a man just flying down the road,” Helen Duneo, who was nearby, told CTV. “He was knocked out in the intersection. And then I saw a lady hanging onto the window. We called 911 and we stayed with her.”

People ‘trying to help’

Claudia Versteeg, who was an eyewitness at the scene, told CTV that she saw a woman pass away shortly after.

“I was just hit by a heavy truck in front of me,” Versteeg said. “I had no choice … I need to get out of there. People are screaming, people are running, people are flying.”

Duneo also told CTV that she witnessed the impact of the collision, which was followed by an “extensive” rescue scene.

“There were police officers everywhere,” she said. “They had people on the ground, there was no life left in anyone. Everyone was kind of shocked.”

British Columbia’s Chief Coroner has been notified.
